Living with Acne Prone Skin: From my teens to my 30’s!
Have you spent endless hours scrolling through your phone, desperately searching for some new solution to curing your acne? Hours reading and re-reading reviews of creams, gels, tonics, lotions, peels, and the latest skin-tech advances only to be left feeling more overwhelmed and flummoxed about where to start?!
I have been there too, and I know this pain! My experience of this started in my early teens; it was the product of major hormonal changes and severe stress and anxiety. Add on to those a fair whack of cystic acne and my mental health took a bit of downward spiral!
There are challenges that come with having skin that is prone to flaring, it tends to be sensitive to environmental and hormonal changes, and is affected by psychological and emotional health. I have never found a product that has ‘fixed’ my skin. It has been a process of learning and working on having a better mind-body connection that has truly helped, along with a combination of professional training, self-care practises; and a long, explorative journey into finding the products that work for my skin and its’ fluctuating state.
Using a combination of skin care products that work for us is hugely beneficial. It’s important to nourish and look after this wonderful organ and this is where our skin care routine comes into its own! Seeing this routine as an act of self-care, not vanity, was a positive step for me and one that I love sharing. I feel this is something we don’t talk about or see enough of, it’s like there is a sense of shame in exposing our imperfections or scars and that if we do, they could make us less beautiful or valid in some way.
From makeup that can totally change skin tone and texture, to filters and face and body editing apps that can literally transform a person into someone else; these are scary realities we live with today and can have a hugely negative effect on self-esteem, breeding the false idea that everyone else is flawless, so maybe there’s something wrong with me. There isn’t! And I just wanted to remind you of that in sharing this.
The best gift you can give your skin is to get to know it, from the workings of the lymphatic system, to the stresses and triggers that irritate and upset it. If you are battling with acne right now, it does get better, the skin has an incredible capacity to heal as do we from the inside out.
